NASA says it has major news about Mars and will announce the findings at a media conference.
In a statement titled "NASA to announce Mars mystery solved" NASA said it would announce the findings at a press conference in Washington at 4.30am AEST on Tuesday.
The media release provided no detail about what the findings would be, leading to widespread speculation online.
The briefing will be led by Jim Green, director of planetary science at NASA Headquarters. Other participants included Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters and Lujendra Ojha of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
CNN reported that three of the scientists set to speak at the press conference were also authors of new research about flowing water on Mars.
The news organisation said that the announcement was "likely to have something to do with water: in the soil, underground or in the atmosphere."
But that hasn't stopped many from speculating that life had been found on Mars.
Members of the public have been invited to ask NASA questions during the press conference with the hashtag #AskNASA.
