The government is believed to be close to signing off on a six-figure sum with Redflex after point-to-point cameras on the Hume freeway were suspended because of faulty readings.
Nine motorists were incorrectly fined as a result of the bungle and there have been calls for the fines of all 68,000 drivers clocked over the speed limit since 2007 to be refunded.
Mr Brumby said the government was seeking compensation from the camera operator, but as far as he was aware no agreement had been reached.
"We're still in those discussions with the company," he said.

"I've not been briefed on this, I heard the speculation and the advice I've got is that no agreement's been reached."
Mr Brumby said any funds received would be spent on road safety.
A spokesman for the Department of Justice later said a deal was very close to being finalised with an agreement expected as early as Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.
The sum was likely to be six figures, but it's possible the exact amount will not be disclosed.
"Negotiations are verging on being completed, but there's a few details being thrashed out," the spokesman said.
