Speeding driver steals bike in escape bid

A speeding driver crashed his car then stole a bike in a bid to escape being caught, police say.

A driver who crashed his car after exceeding the speed limit by 80km/h in a police chase then tried to escape on a bicycle in Sydney's southwest.

At about 1.45am (AEDT) on Wednesday police on the Hume Highway at Ingleburn detected a green Holden Commodore travelling north allegedly at 130km/h in a 110km/h zone.

They say the driver ignored orders to stop and a pursuit began north on the motorway and east into the M5 Motorway.

Police allege the vehicle reached a speed of 160km/h in an 80km/h road works area near Casula before they ended the chase.

Soon after, witnesses alerted police to the crashed car off Henry Lawson Drive at Milperra, but the driver was missing.

Police dogs helped track the man and he was found a short distance away on an allegedly stolen bicycle.

The 26-year-old was arrested and charged with 19 offences.

They included failing to stop in a police pursuit, reckless, dangerous and negligent driving, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, licence expired, larceny, possessing a prohibited drug and breach of bail.

The Beacon Hill man was refused bail to appear in Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.
