World No.1 Jordan Spieth will play alongside English drawcard Lee Westwood and fellow former champion Geoff Ogilvy in the marquee morning group for the first round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Spieth, defending his title at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney, will tee off at 7.05am AEDT as he looks to back up his runaway win last year.

Former Masters champion Adam Scott will hit off just after midday with countryman John Senden and big-hitting Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.

Veteran Peter Senior, fresh off his remarkable Australian Masters victory at Huntingdale, believes this year's field is "one of the strongest we've seen".

Senior has been grouped with Brett Rumford and highly-rated American amateur Bryson DeChambeau in an early-morning trio.

Three-time champion Greg Chalmers, popular Northern Irishman Darren Clarke, the 2011 British Open winner, and 2015 US PGA Tour winner Steven Bowditch tee off in the group following Spieth.

British Open runner-up Marc Leishman will play with Robert Allenby and local club member and fellow US PGA Tour star Matt Jones at 12.20pm.
