SOCCER - Tim Cahill came off the bench to deliver Australia the winner in the 1-0 result against United Arab Emirates in their World Cup qualifier in Abu Dhabi. Cahill's second-half volley from Brad Smith's centimetre-perfect cross saw the Socceroos maintain its winning record on their path to Russia 2018.

CRICKET - Glenn Maxwell smashed 145 not out off 65 balls to lift Australia to a record total and 85-run victory over Sri Lanka to open the two-match Twenty20 series in Pallekele. The visitors powered to 3-263 before Sri Lanka fell well short with 9-178 in reply.

TENNIS - Frenchman Gael Monfils has reached the US Open semi-finals after a straight-sets victory over 24th-seeded compatriot Lucas Pouille. No.2 seed Angelique Kerber ground down Italian Roberta Vinci 7-5 6-0 in their quarter final showdown.

SOCCER - South Korea have been held to a surprise 0-0 draw by Syria in World Cup qualifying, while Japan got their campaign back on track with a 2-0 win over Thailand in Bangkok. Iran drew 0-0 with China and Saudi Arabia fought back from a goal down to beat Iraq 2-1.

GOLF - Australia's Jason Day remains on top of the world rankings, while Rory McIlroy has jumped from fifth to third after ending his 16-month title drought on the US PGA Tour this week. American Dustin Johnson held onto second, while Adam Scott is the next best-placed Australian in sixth.
