GOLF - World No.1 Jason Day is in good shape in the opening round of his title defence of the US PGA Tour Playoff event at The Barclays. Despite battling a wayward driver, Day shot a three-under-68 at Bethpage Black to sit just two shots off the lead midway through the opening round. American Patrick Reed and Scotland's Martin Laird lead at five-under 66.

CRICKET - Veteran Sri Lanka allrounder Tillakaratne Dilshan will retire from one-day international cricket after the third match of the current series against Australia.

SOCCER - Manchester City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from Barcelona for STG13.75 million ($A24 million) in a move that could spell the end of England No.1 Joe Hart's decade-long career at the Premier League club.

OLYMPICS - Russia will award each of its medallists at this year's Olympics Games in Rio a BMW sports utility vehicle and at least 1.7 million roubles ($A32,850), according to state media.
