OLYMPICS - Security is again in the spotlight in Rio after US swimming star Ryan Lochte and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint. Lochte said one of the robbers put a gun to his forehead before taking his wallet and money. Meanwhile, Australia's Olympic athletes have been banned from stepping on Copacabana and Ipanema beaches after dark.

OLYMPICS - Swimming chiefs will finetune Australia's approach to the Olympics after mixed results in Rio. Head coach Jacco Verhaeren said dramatic changes aren't needed but tinkering must be done after Australia won three gold, four silver and three bronze medals, but experienced favourites flopped.

OLYMPICS - Australian sailing cousins Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin have extended their lead in the Nacra 17 with a win in race 10. The pair have two more races to go before the final medal race and are 12 points ahead of Italy in second place.

OLYMPICS - The Australian men's water polo team have kept their quarter-final hopes alive with a convincing 12-7 win over unbeaten Greece. The Sharks are relying on Brazil beating Hungary or Japan upsetting Serbia to advance.

OLYMPICS - American Justin Rose has claimed a dramatic first Olympic golf gold medal in 112 years, beating Swede Henrik Stenson. Australia's Marcus Fraser failed to go with the two major winners and dropped out of contention, finishing in fifth.

SOCCER - Manchester United and Liverpool have begun their 2016-17 English Premier League campaigns with victories. United, in their first league game under new manager Jose Mourinho, beat Bournemouth 3-1, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring. Liverpool were 4-3 winners at Arsenal.

CRICKET - Re-called top order batsman Shaun Marsh has given Australia the edge over Sri Lanka on day two of the third Test against Sri Lanka. The tourists were 1-141 at stumps in reply to Sri Lanka's first innings of 355. Marsh is 64 not out and Steve Smith unbeaten on 61.

CRICKET - Leg-spinner Yasir Shah has taken five wickets to help Pakistan crush England by 10 wickets in the final Test at The Oval and level a fluctuating series 2-2.
