PARALYMPICS - Crowds are filing into Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium for the Paralympic Games opening ceremomy. The three-hour ceremony heralds the start of the 11-day event, with more than 4000 athletes from 161 countries to compete for 528 gold medals over 23 paralympic sports.

TENNIS - Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova has swept past Croatian teenager Ana Konjuh 6-2 6-2 to book a spot in the US Open semi-finals.

TENNIS - The Tennis Integrity Unit is looking into a first-round match at the US Open after irregular betting patterns were detected. The alert came after 15th seed Timea Bacsinszky's 6-1 6-1 victory over Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia on August 30.

GOLF - Former world No.1 and 14-time major winner Tiger Woods has announced he hopes to return to the US PGA Tour in October after a year recuperating from back surgery.

CRICKET - Openers Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif have hit half centuries as Pakistan defeated England by nine wickets in their one-off Twenty20 international. The tourists reached England's meagre target of 7-135 in the 15th over.

CYCLING - Chris Froome still faces a near-impossible task to catch leader Nairo Quintana after finishing alongside the Colombian in stage 17 of the Tour of Spain, which was won by Swiss rider Mathias Frank.

RUGBY - Warren Gatland has been named head coach of the British and Irish Lions for next year's tour of New Zealand. Gatland has done the job since 2007.

CRICKET - Sri Lanka offspinner Sachithra Senanayake has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee for using disparaging language at Australian captain David Warner during the first Twenty20.

BOXING - Tyson Fury's world heavyweight title rematch with Wladimir Klitschko will take place in Manchester on October 29, the British fighter's camp says. Fury ended Klitschko's 11-year unbeaten run on points last November.

BOXING - Australian boxer Lucas Browne feels vindicated by the WBA decision to match him with Fres Oquendo for their regular heavyweight boxing world title, which they stripped from him after a positive drug test earlier this year.
