OLYMPICS - Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer will be forced to miss the Rio Olympics and the rest of the 2016 season due to continuing problems with an injured knee.

CRICKET - Australia has recovered from the early loss of its openers to close at 2-66 at stumps on a rain-shortened day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Kandy. Earlier, the visitors skittled Sri Lanka for just 117 in its first innings. Rain stopped play before a ball could be bowled in the final session.

OLYMPICS - More than 80 athletes from the 387-strong Russian Olympic team so far have been barred from the Rio Games due to the country's doping scandal. International federations in canoeing, modern pentathlon, swimming and rowing have ruled out Russian athletes.

SOCCER - Juventus have signed Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli for 90 million euros ($A132.4 million), the third highest transfer fee ever paid.

SOCCER - First half goals to Paulo Dybala and Medhi Benatia have given Italian champions Juventus a winning end to their tour of Australia, defeating Tottenham 2-1 at the MCG.

CRICKET - Cricket South Africa (CSA) will formally introduce racial quotas at national team level after pressure from the government. CSA will set a minimum number of black players to be selected in all their national teams throughout a year, rather than a match-by-match basis.
