SWIMMING - Star American swimmer Ryan Lochte has been suspended for 10 months for his part in a scandal where he and three teammates "over-exaggerated" a tale about being robbed at gunpoint during the Rio Olympics.

PARALYMPICS - Australian co-captain Daniela Di Toro has been handed a lesson in her debut para-table tennis match at the Paralympics in Rio. The six-time Paralympian, who switched from para-tennis due to injury, went down 3-0 to world No.4 Nada Matic of Serbia in her first pool match. Fellow Australian Melissa Tapper defeated Turkey's Etris Umran 3-1 and became the first Australian to compete in both an Olympics and Paralympics in the same year in the process.

GOLF - Australian World No.1 Jason Day is well off the pace as rain halted play early in the opening round of the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club. Day sits five shots back from leader Roberto Castro, who managed to negotiate 12 holes before the suspension of play.

CYCLING - Australia's ORICA BikeExchange team rider Magnus Cort Nielsen has edged his way to victory in stage 18 of the Tour of Spain. Colombian Nairo Quintana maintained his 3:37 lead over nearest challenger Chris Froome.

SOCCER - Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have lost their appeals against transfer bans which were imposed on them for breaching rules on signing non-Spanish under-18 players, FIFA says.

SOCCER - Leicester City's club record signing Islam Slimani will make his Premier League debut in the champions' clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

SOCCER - Cristiano Ronaldo will play his first La Liga game of the season for Spanish giants Real Madrid after missing first two games of the season due to a knee injury sustained playing in Portugal's Euro 2016 final triumph.

OLYMPICS - Italy's Olympic medallists have written a letter to Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi seeking support for the city's bid to host the 2024 summer Games. Raggi has made clear she has other priorities but has yet to definitively back away from the bid.
