GOLF - American Phil Mickelson has seized early command of the British Open with a record-equalling first-round 63 at Royal Troon. Mickelson's eight-under display also matched the best-ever score at a major.

GOLF - Australian world No.1 Jason Day shot a disappointing two-over-par 73 as Australia's 11-strong charge failed to fire in the first round. Adam Scott and Matt Jones were the only Australians to break par. Scott Hend returned an even-par 71, one better than Marcus Fraser, Rod Pampling, Greg Chalmers and Nathan Holman. Marc Leishman posted a 74.

CYCLING - Briton Chris Froome held on to the overall lead in the Tour de France despite being involved in a pile-up in the closing kilometres of the 12th stage. Belgian Thomas De Gendt won the wind-shortened stage.

BASKETBALL - NBA champion Patty Mills starred as the Boomers beat a US college all-star team 93-63 in Melbourne in Australia's last hit-out before the Olympics. Mills scored 29 points and had five assists.

CRICKET - Captain Misbah-ul-Haq hit a century in his maiden test appearance at Lord's and spearheaded Pakistan to 6-282 against England on the opening day of the first Test. The 42-year-old Misbah smashed an unbeaten 110.
