At least 1032 people were executed globally in 2016 - 602 fewer than in 2015 when Amnesty International recorded the highest number of executions in a single year since 1989.
At least 3117 people were sentenced to death in 55 countries for 2016, up from 1998 people in 2015.
These numbers exclude the thousands of people believed to be executed in China.
