'Spray on skin' maker sets sights on Iran

Avita Medical's 'spray on skin' products for the treatment of burns, wounds and skin defects will be available in Iran thanks to a new distribution deal.

Avita Medical has struck a distribution deal in Iran for its 'spray on skin' products for the treatment of burns, wounds and skin defects, potentially paving they way for a new major market for the the group.

The distribution deal with Iranian-based Teb Sanaat Lotus will also include a dedicated clinic for Avita's products in Iran, which emerged from international sanctions over its nuclear program earlier in 2016.

Avita chief executive Adam Kelliher said using a dedicated clinic is a new approach for the company, and will help reach an important market.

"The dedicated ReNovaCell clinic and training centre should support the rapid adoption of our skin renewal technology. And when this platform is further rolled out to burns and chronic wounds, we anticipate Iran will become a significant market for Avita," Mr Kelliher said.

Avita said there was demand for its ReCell device, as burns leave some 150,000 sufferers hospitalised a year in Iran, about eight times higher than the average global rate.

Iran is also a strong market for Avita's ReGenerCell device, as the nation has an estimated 800,000 chronic wounds patients, resulting in about 175,000 amputations annually.

Teb will distribute Avita's products through Zikad International Aesthetics Supplier, its Iranian partner company which operates four high-end aesthetics clinics and supplies premium aesthetic products across the country.

Avita shares were up 0.5 cents, or 5.4 per cent, at 9.7 cents at 1505 AEST.
