The federal coalition is promising $300 million for car parks at up to 30 Melbourne train stations to "bust congestion", but the state Labor government says key growth corridors have missed out.
Park-and-ride facilities at train stations across seven train lines would take 13,000 cars off the road each day, the federal government says.
But the Victoria government has attacked the election funding promise for skipping the biggest growth areas in Melbourne, including Sunbury and Werribee, to focus on marginal Liberal seats and questioned where land for many of the car parks would come from.
"The fact that the Prime Minister for Sydney's list today does not include one car park for the west of Melbourne, the fastest growing area in the nation, shows this is no more than a political stunt," Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said in a statement.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison's Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge said Werribee would benefiting from the airport rail link and defended the stations selected.
"We do want to encourage people to take the train because that takes pressure off our roads, but to encourage them, you have to provide the parking opportunities and a lot of these car parks are full very early in the morning," Mr Tudge told ABC Radio Melbourne.
