Square launches Australian online payments

US mobile payments group Square has boosted its Australian offering, enabling businesses to process online transactions.

Australian businesses can now process their online transactions with a US mobile payments group set up by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

Australia is the first country outside of the US and Canada to get access to the e-commerce service from Square, a company that aims to make the card payments process simpler for business owners.

Square's credit and debit card readers are popular among small businesses, including cafes and tradies, due to their accessibility and relatively low processing fees.

Ben Pfisterer, Square's manager in Australia, said customers have been asking for online payment processing capabilities.

"They don't have any solution in the market which provides a holistic view of their business and sales," he said.

Online payments are charged at a flat rate of 2.2 per cent for each transaction, compared to Square's 1.9 per cent charge for an in-person card payment.
