Sri Lanka cannot be taken lightly: Holland

Although Sri Lanka struggled during their pre-Test series tour match against a Cricket Australia XI, spinner Jon Holland expects a stronger showing in Brisbane.

Complacency seems unlikely given Australia's experience against India, but Victorian spinner Jon Holland says a bounce back against Sri Lanka cannot be taken for granted.

Holland gave a charitable assessment of the tourists despite the Cricket Australia XI dominating their three-day pink-ball tour match at Hobart's Bellerive Oval.

The contest ended in a draw on Saturday, after Sri Lanka looked capable of losing after slumping to 4-39 in pursuit of 365.

However, they reached the close of 6-131 without needing assistance from captain Dinesh Chandimal.

Holland took 4-28 in Sri Lanka's second innings to lead a diligent bowling attack against a relaxed opponent.

No Sri Lankan batsmen compiled a half-century, with opener Lahiru Thirimanne's unbeaten 46 on Saturday the highest individual score.

In contrast, Kurtis Patterson scored 157 and 102 without being dismissed.

Holland doubted the non first-class match was an accurate indication of Sri Lanka's chances in the two-Test series, which starts in Brisbane on Thursday.

"The Sri Lankans didn't really look to score too much. It seemed like they were just keen to bat against a pink ball under lights," he said.

Holland gave credit to Thirimanne and fellow opener Dimuth Karunaratne, who top-scored in the first innings with 44.

"The two openers looked good and batted quite a bit of time in both innings but I don't thing there were any stand outs," he said.

"It'll be a different game for them at the Gabba under lights against a pink ball but they're international players and they'll prepare for it."

Sri Lanka head to Brisbane with one injury concern after top order batsman Kusal Mendis was struck on the finger while fielding at short leg on Thursday.

He did not bat although team management indicated the 34-Test strokemaker would feature at the Gabba.

Mendis, who made 225 runs at 75.0 with a best of 141no in the recent Test series in New Zealand, is vital given former captain Angelo Mathews injured a hamstring across the Tasman and has returned home.
