Sri Lanka pick up pace v Bangladesh

Sri Lanka have picked up the pace in the first first Test against Bangladesh, moving to 3-155 in Galle at tea.

Kusal Mendis made the most of a reprieve to post an unbeaten 80 and help Sri Lanka to 3-155 at tea on the opening day of the first cricket Test against Bangladesh.

Mendis edged the first ball he faced to wicketkeeper Liton Das and started walking back to the pavilion but was recalled by the umpires who ruled a no-ball after television replays showed that fast bowler Subashis Roy had overstepped the crease.

It would have been two wickets off successive balls for the right-arm paceman, who had also dismissed opener Upul Tharanga (4) in what was his first over.

Sri Lanka slumped to 3-92 when vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal was out. Playing the game as a specialist batsman and batting at No.4 in the absence of captain Angelo Mathews, Chandimal was slow off the mark and took 54 deliveries for his five runs.

The dot ball pressure eventually got to him as he slashed hard at a wide Mustafizur Rahman delivery and was caught at gully by Mehedi Hasan.

Asela Gunaratne (26 not out) joined Mendis and the pair combined in an unbeaten 63-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Mendis produced some elegant drives and was in good touch as he raised his half-century with a glanced boundary off Mehedi.

His unbeaten innings has come off 136 deliveries and contained 11 boundaries.

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne was the other batsman to be dismissed in the innings when he dragged a Mehedi delivery onto the stumps. He made 30 off 76 balls with two fours.

Veteran Rangana Herath, who is leading the team in the absence of injured skipper Mathews, won the toss for Sri Lanka and decided to bat.

The Sri Lankans are unbeaten in 16 Tests against Bangladesh.
