Sri Lanka rains toll climbs to 23

At least 23 people have died in heavy monsoon rains, according to official figures.

At least 23 people have died and over 75,013 have been evacuated in Sri Lanka during heavy monsoon rains over the last 10 days, according to official figures.

The country's Disaster Management Centre said 13 people are also missing, while the displaced have been put up in 339 camps and shelters.

At least 166,228 people have been affected by heavy rainfall and strong winds that have lashed around 20 districts, especially in Sri Lanka's south over the past week.

The Centre says 118 houses have been destroyed while another 5,073 houses and 24 buildings have been damaged.

At least 1359 members of the armed forces have been deployed in rescue operations across the country.
