Sri Lanka target 'big wicket' Williamson

Sri Lanka see Kane Williamson, unbeaten on 78 as New Zealand need 47 more runs with five wickets in hand, as the key to deciding the second cricket Test.

Sri Lanka unsurprisingly see star batsman Kane Williamson as the big hurdle to pulling off an upset win over New Zealand in the second cricket Test.

The Black Caps will start day four in Hamilton on Monday at 142-5, needing 47 more runs to take the series 2-0.

After a rare failure in the first innings, when he fell for one, Williamson is unbeaten on 78.

He has anchored the chase while some playing some typically stylish shots despite hobbing at times.

The loss of allrounder Mitchell Santner for four late on Sunday tightened up the contest a notch.

"We have a slight chance," bowling coach Champaka Ramanayake said, adding that Williamson was the key.

"We have to get that big wicket early to put them under pressure. He's a class player, we all know that, but you never know on this wicket - he might get a good ball."

Williamson's latest knock has taken him to 1142 runs for 2015, putting him just 22 behind skipper Brendon McCullum's New Zealand record for most Test runs in a calendar year, achieved in 2014.

Neil Wagner, whose 3-40 backed up fellow seamer Tim Southee's 4-26 as Sri Lanka were skittled for 133 in the second innings, said the Black Caps know they still have a job on their hands.

"We know Sri Lanka are going to come out really hard and they're going to fight," he said.

"They're a proud nation. The way they've been playing their cricket just showed."

But Wagner was also confident that the remainder of Black Caps batting line-up could get the job done.

"I think everybody that is left in the sheds is capable of doing it and we have full faith in that."
