Stan Wawrinka into Aust Open 2nd round

Stan Wawrinka's first-round opponent Dmitry Tursunov has succumb to injury, with the Australian Open match ending after 94 minutes.

Former champion Stan Wawrinka advanced to the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday night but not in the fashion he would have liked.

Wawrinka held a 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 lead in his opening-round clash with Dmitry Tursunov when the Russian called it quits after one hour and 34 minutes.

"That's not the way you want to win. Never happy with an injury of an opponent," Wawrinka said.

"After a little bit he couldn't really push more, so that's why he stop.

"That's part of the game, so ... I'm happy to get through the first one."

It had previously been a good workout for Wawrinka, who converted only one of nine break points on offer in the contest.

Wawrinka, who is seeded fourth and won the Open in 2014, next faces 37-year-old Czech veteran Radek Stepanek.

Stepanek has triumphed in four of the pair's six meetings on the ATP circuit but Wawrinka won their previous two matches in straight sets.

"Always a tough opponent. Play him last year in Tokyo - tough match," the Swiss ace said.

"He's always playing good.

"Quite fast surface, so he should serve and volley ... if I'm serving well, playing well, aggressive, hopefully I can make it through."
