Former president Barack Obama helped spread Christmas joy to the young patients and children at Children's National hospital in northwest Washington on Wednesday.
Wearing a Santa hat and lugging around a red bag full of presents - collected by Mr Obama and his staff - the former president surprised the young patients in the hospital's playroom.

Mr Obama handed out jigsaw puzzles, Hot Wheels sets, remote-control cars and nail polish to the children.
One young girl broke into tears as Mr Obama walked into her room and gave her a hug.
Word spread quickly of Mr Obama's visit, prompting staff and patients to gather at the nursing station and send him off with a rendition of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas".
The hospital took to social media to thank Mr Obama for making the children's day "so much brighter".
"Who said the Grinch stole Christmas?! Our patients and their families received a HUGE holiday surprise when @barackobama warmed our hallways with a huge bag of gifts for our patients," the Children's national wrote.
