Judging by the enthusiastic reaction to Hollywood's premier of the latest Star Wars instalment Sydney fans are in for a treat when the much-hyped film opens in Australia.

Cate Blanchett and Rachael Taylor and other local celebrities are expected to walk the red carpet at the Sydney premiere on Wednesday night.

The premiere will be followed five hours later with the first public screening in local cinemas at midnight.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, heralding the return of the franchise after a decade-long absence from the big screen.

"1st Star Wars review: It was epic, awesome & perfect. The cast was stellar. JJ killed it!," The Office actor Rainn Wilson tweeted.

"I have so much I want to say about Star Wars... Some faults, but no doubt best Star Wars film since '83," New Zealand actor Eric Vespe said.

The lucky few who saw the film were sworn to secrecy so as to not spoil the film for fans, but that didn't stop them from raving about the film.

"#StarWarsForceAwakens totally delivers #nospoilers I repeat #nospoilers again #nospoilers just #wow," Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks tweeted.

"Well I've seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens. My prediction: #1 at the box office this week," Modern Family actor Eric Stonestreet said.

The film has so far received an extremely positive reaction and some stars said they couldn't control their emotions watching the film.

"Cried like a baby, whooped like a teen! #StarWarsForceAwakens," West Wing actor Rob Lowe said.

"Amazing!Amazing!Amazing! In awe. It's all you want it to be. Old/new/funny/heartbreaking. Daisy Ridley is astonishing," actor Fred Savage said.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year and fans have remained cautiously optimistic about Episode VII of the series directed by JJ Abrams.
