Star Wars: The Force Awakens has rocketed into No.1 spot at the Australian box office, leaving competitors for dust.

The latest sequel's debut chalked up an astronomical $27 million in takings according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

This is the biggest opening weekend for a film in Australia. The title was previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

Far behind in almost another galaxy, Hotel Transylvania trailed at No.2, taking in $1.281 million.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Aussie Liam Hemsworth, was also pushed from first to third, breaking a four-week run of number one ranking.

James Bond saga Spectre also dropped from second to fourth.

Two new Bollywood films entered the list, with romantic musical comedy Dilwale placing fifth, and epic historical romantic drama Bajirao Mastani debuting at eighth.

Aussie film The Dressmaker managed to skirt any drama from Star Wars' meteoric entry, staying solid at seventh.

Filling the last two spots were US Christmas comedy The Night Before, and Chinese adventure fantasy film Mojin: The Lost Legend, at ninth and tenth respectively.
