Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will be rested from the upcoming five-match one-day cricket series in South Africa.
The pace duo will remain in Australia ahead of a demanding stretch of 10 Test matches, which begins a touch over three weeks after the final one-day clash.
"Both Mitchell and Josh have had big tours of Sri Lanka and have a heavy workload ahead of them with ten Tests to be played this summer," national selector Rod Marsh said.
"It is important they are managed appropriately and we believe missing the tour of South Africa is the right time for them to take a break."
With the current one-day series in Sri Lanka also secured, Hazlewood will be flown home early from the sub-continent in a bid to prepare for the upcoming summer.
Starc, however, will remain for the last ODI and two Twenty20 fixtures.
Australia head to South Africa in late September to play a match against Ireland, before the first ODI against the hosts on September 30.
"This also provides a good opportunity for some of our up-and-coming fast-bowler to push for selection," Marsh said.
"With a number of bowlers currently coming back from injury it is important for us to continue to build up a battery of quality fast-bowlers for Australia."
The series then wraps up on October 12, 22 days before the first Test against South Africa in Perth.
Australia's cricketers have 41 days of international matches at home this summer, before a four-Test series in India next February and March.
However it is expected a number of stars may sit out the season-ending Twenty20s against Sri Lanka to head to India early to prepare for the series.
The squad for the South African away series is expected to be announced following the last Sri Lankan one-dayer on Sunday.
