Starpharma licenses VivaGel BV in Aust, NZ

Starpharma has licensed its VivaGel BV treatment to Aspen Pharmacare in Australia and New Zealand for an undisclosed sum.

Biotech Starpharma is letting Aspen Pharmacare Australia market and distribute its Vivagel BV treatment in Australia and New Zealand for an undisclosed sum.

Aspen will market and distribute the treatment for bacterial vaginosis, that's due to be launched in 2016, to clinicians and pharmacies.

In return, Starpharma will receive royalties on net sales.

Starpharma still holds the commercialisation rights in the rest of the world.

"We believe Aspen is an ideal sales and marketing partner for VivaGel BV in the Australian and New Zealand markets as they have a proven track record of successfully marketing products in the women's healthcare segment," Starpharma chief executive Jackie Fairley said on Friday.

"BV (bacterial vaginosis) is the world's most common vaginal infection and a significant unmet medical need."

Starpharma already has marketing approval from the European Union for VivaGel BV treatment, a water-based gel that's delivered vaginally, for the rapid relief of bacterial vaginosis and its symptoms.

The company's lead products are based on Vivagel, a dendrimer (a type of synthetic nanoscale polymer) which has antimicrobial properties.

Starpharma has separate licence deals with Ansell and Okamoto Industries to market a VivaGel condom.

Shares in Starpharma were 1.25 cents, or 1.96 per cent, higher at 65 cents.
