Stars makes it two from two in WBBL

Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning has steered her side to successive wins over the Brisbane Heat to open the Women's Big Bash League.

The Melbourne Stars have opened the inaugural Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) with back-to-back wins over the Brisbane Heat.

Playing at Melbourne's Junction Oval, Stars' skipper Meg Lanning steered her side to impressive victories on Saturday in their double-header to open the tournament.

The Australian captain showed why she's rated the world No.1 with the bat, blasting 90 runs off 58 balls in the first match.

In the afternoon game, the 23-year-old backed it up with 75no off 56 balls, including 10 fours, to the delight of the 1500-strong crowd.

She was ably assisted by Katie Mack (24) and England batter Natalie Sciver (29).

The Stars finished game two with 147 from their 20 overs and the Heat looked on target early in their response.

But the loss of Grace Harris for 37, caught by Alana King off the bowling of Sciver, started their downfall and her Australian teammate Jess Jonassen was left to do the heavy lifting alone with the Heat falling 10 runs short.

Jonassen finished unbeaten on 52 from 48 balls.

Former tennis pro-turned cricketer Ash Barty was unable to back up her impressive first match knock of 39 from 27 balls and was stumped by wicketkeeper Emma Inglis for one.

Lanning was named player of the match in both games.
