The Melbourne Stars kept their WBBL finals aspirations alive after spinning their way to an upset six-wicket victory over the in-form Brisbane Heat at Mackay.

The Stars set up their third victory of the season with a wonderful performance with the ball, primarily from their tweakers, restricting the Heat to a paltry 8-93 before comfortably chasing the small target down in 17.2 overs.

Offspinner Erin Osborne was the chief destroyer on Saturday night with the ball taking 4-20, including gun opener Beth Mooney, who was bowled off the second ball of the night.

Wrist spinners Alana King and Kristen Beams combined to snare 3-19 from eight bamboozling overs.

The Heat slumped from 3-8 to 5-29 and things weren't looking much better when they were still reeling at 6-40 in the 13th before Southern Stars allrounder Jess Jonassen produced a fine rearguard run-a-ball 46 in difficult batting conditions.

Joanssen also proved more than handy with the ball, finishing with 1-6 off three overs, and Sammy-Jo Johnson took 2-26 but Brisbane's total always looked light on.

After Lizelle Lee fell for nine, fellow South African Mignon du Preez held the Stars' run chase together, top-scoring with an unbeaten 36 off 34 deliveries to slam shut the Heat's five-match winning streak.

It was also sweet and swift revenge for Friday night's loss.
