Stars turn out for Cats in Melbourne

Television reality stars rubbed shoulders with models and actors for the Melbourne debut of Cats the Musical, starring Delta Goodrem.

It wasn't Singing in the Rain, it was Cats.

But as drizzle fell in Melbourne for opening night of Cats the Musical, stars treading the red carpet could've been mistaken for thinking so.

Television reality stars rubbed shoulders with models and actors for Sunday's debut of the acclaimed West End revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famed production, starring Delta Goodrem.

It wasn't the first time for Collette Mann.

"I think this will be my third time but I've got two friends in it this time," she said.

Molly Meldrum joked with photographers, taking one's camera to take his own red carpet shot.

A pregnant Lauren Newton wore a headband with diamond cat ears and The Housewives of Melbourne were there in all their finery.

Cats, based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, is one of the longest running shows in West End and Broadway history and will feature Goodrem singing Memory, one of the most famous theatre songs of all time.

In her first theatre stage debut, the Australian pop star plays Grizabella, an old cat whose glamour days are long behind her.

"It feels like I've found a real love of my life," Goodrem earlier told reporters.

In a sign of the times, the revived show will introduce a rapping "street cat" in the famed Rum Tum Tugger role, who will show off some serious breakdance moves.
