Stars unimpressed with Australian costume designer's Oscars look

Australian Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan's Oscars look was greeted with shock and scorn at the industry's night of nights.

The walk to the Oscar stage this year was an unusual one for Jenny Beavan.

Instead of applause for the acclaimed costume designer, there was silence and bemused stares from her Hollywood peers.

Beavan wore a leather jacket with a Swarovski skull and flames as she made her way to the stage to claim her Oscar.

She had just won best costume design for Mad Max: Fury Road.

The scorn from the audience were captured in a six-second video watched 16 million times since Monday’s Oscars.

However a longer clip appears to show the alleged dissenters applauding as Beavan reaches the stage.

Speaking after her win, Beavan said she had deliberately chosen not to wear a glamourous Hollywood-style gown.

“I look ridiculous in a beautiful gown," she said.

"This was homage to Mad Max and I obviously didn’t get it quite right at the Baftas - the scarf was meant to be an oil rag.”

In January, Baftas host Stephen Fry referred to her as a "bag lady" before announcing she had won the award for best costume design, again for the Mad Max sequel.
