This year's State of the Union was one of the most tweeted. Tweets about the speech amounted to 4.5 million, taking over from the previous record of three million.
But not everybody was talking about the contents of US president Donald Trump’s speech, which covered everything from immigration to North Korea and the notorious Salvadoran MS-13 gang.
Many people were taking issue with Mr Trump's clapping during his 90-minute speech.
"Why is the POTUS clapping for his own speech at every pause? Is he afraid the audience won't know when they are supposed to applaud?" one man wrote.
"New drinking game: take a drink every time there's a standing ovation & take a shot every time Trump claps into the mic," a woman quipped.
Another Twitter user said, "I wish Blue Ivy was in the audience of the State of the Union tonight so she could shush the idiots clapping", referencing viral footage of Beyonce and Jay-Z's daughter telling her applauding mother to be quiet at the 2018 Grammys.
During his speech, Mr Trump spoke of national unity and strong borders in his first State of the Union address on Tuesday.
He called for "one team, one people and one American family" after a year plagued by acrimony, division and scandal.
Alongside Republican politicians, with Mr Trump flanked by vice president Mike Pence and speaker Paul Ryan behind him, dozens of Democrats were also present.
Some Democrats wore black to honour the victims of sexual harassment whle others wore butterfly stickers in support of immigrants - two social issues that more than any others have riled America in the age of Mr Trump.
Mr Trump's address ended after about 90 minutes with enthusiastic Republicans jumping to their feet to applaud the commander-in-chief at frequent intervals.
His predecessor, Barack Obama, delivered these addresses that ended about after an hour, while Bill Clinton's were not far behind, with his last State of the Union in 1999 lasting for an hour and 28 minutes, according to the University of California Santa Barbara's The American Presidency Project.
The top tweeted moments of the State of the Union, according to the Twitter Government, was when Mr Trump said, “we stand for the national anthem”, when he spoke about immigration reform and the MS-13 gang.
Meanwhile the top tweeted people during the address were Mr Trump, Mr Obama and Mr Ryan.
