States consider national energy plan

Where the states and territories stand on the National Energy Guarantee, which will be considered by the nation's energy and climate ministers on Friday.

WHERE THE STATES STAND ON THE NATIONAL ENERGY GUARANTEE

ACT

Greens leader and Climate Change Minister Shane Rattenbury is unimpressed with the 26-28 per cent emissions reductions target, supporting a higher figure and making the electricity sector pull its weight compared with agriculture and transport.

New South Wales

Energy Minister Don Harwin has described it as a "positive step for national reform", but wants more flesh on the bones of the reliability and emissions components of the policy.

Queensland

Energy Minister Anthony Lynham has indicated there's no chance the Labor government will support the guarantee if it undermines Queensland's commitment to 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030.

South Australia

With the Liberal Party ousting the Labor state government, support for the policy is now more likely. New Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan says he's open to supporting the NEG.

Tasmania

The Liberals government went to the polls in March proposing to de-link from the National Electricity Market, under which the NEG operates, in favour of heavy investment in renewables and storage. If that happens only the national emissions reduction target aspect of the guarantee would apply.

Victoria

Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio made it clear ahead of the framework's release that her colleagues won't support anything that undermines their existing renewable energy plans and climate change policies.

Western Australia and Northern Territory

Neither WA or the NT are part of the National Electricity Market under which the NEG will operate so they'll not be affected by the plan but their emissions will count toward Australia's overall total. WA Energy Minister Ben Wyatt has indicated a preference to be part of a national emissions reduction target rather than state-by-state targets.
