Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham has urged his state counterparts to support better pay for high-performing teachers with an emphasis on professional development.
State and territory ministers will be briefed by businessman David Gonski in Adelaide on Friday on the latest review he led into Australia's lagging education system.
Senator Birmingham wants the states to back the panel's recommendations, which include extending programs for "highly accomplished" and "lead" teachers.
"I hope that they will endorse clearly the recommendations from the panel that say that we should put real emphasis around professional development in the teaching profession," Senator Birmingham said.
He says high-level training for teachers will lead to job satisfaction and better outcomes for students.
The report released on Monday also recommends boosting teacher pay to keep high-performing staff in classrooms rather than becoming principals.
But Senator Birmingham denied Mr Gonski's review had called for the national curriculum to be thrown out, three years after it was endorsed by the states.
"What's recommended is that the national curriculum be overhauled in a way where we put in place clear progression steps," the minister said.
