WHY WAS DAY FIVE IN ADELAIDE SUCH A BIG DEAL?
* It was India's sixth Test victory in Australia. India have played 45 Tests in what has generally been a very unhappy hunting ground
* The visitors, hunting their maiden Test series win in Australia after 11 failed attempts, hold a 1-0 series lead in the four-match contest. They haven't been in such a position in Australia since recording a four-wicket win, also in Adelaide, in 2003
* However, that win in 2003 was the second Test. This is the first time India have won the first Test of an Australia tour
* Australia's second-innings total of 291 was a world record. No side has built such a big total in a Test without a single partnership worth 50 runs or more (the previous best effort was Bangladesh's 284 in the West Indies in 2004)
* Ravichandran Ashwin, who captured the final wicket, delivered a total of 86.5 overs in the match. A touring bowler hasn't had such a big Test workload in Australia since Indian legspinner Anil Kumble in 2004 at the SCG
* Australia went close to making history but the highest-successful chase in an Adelaide Test remains Australia's 6-315 in 1902
* The final margin was 31 runs. In terms of runs, India have only recorded two tighter victories (13 runs v Australia in Mumbai 2004-05; 28 runs v England in Kolkata 1972-73)
* Virat Kolhi is India's first skipper to lead his side to Test victory in Australia, South Africa and England. Kohli's overall winning percentage as Test captain is 58.13 (the best by any Indian to have led their country for more than two Tests).
