Stay-at-home dads do less than mums

New research shows that the role of stay-at-home fathers are quite different to stay-at-home mothers in Australia.

A study by the Australian Institute of Family Studies has found that stay-at-home dads are not as productive around the house as stay-at-home mums.

Here are its key findings:

* Stay-at-home dad arrangements make up 75,000 or 4 per cent of two-parent, heterosexual families, and stay-at-home mums 31 per cent.

* Breadwinning mums work an average of 35 hours a week, and their male counterparts 51 hours.

* Stay-at-home dads spend 19 hours a week on child care and working mums 21 hours.

* Women who stay home spend 37 hours a week on child care and housework, compared with 13 hours for working dads.

* Overall, men work 48 hours a week, spend 15 on child care and 13 on housework.

* Women work for 21 hours, spend 30 on housework and 28 on child care.
