STEM scholarships for regional students

Rural and regional Australians are being encouraged to study science, technology, engineering and maths, with scholarships of up to $18,000 on offer.

More than 1200 rural and regional Australians will be granted scholarships of up to $18,000 to study science, technology, engineering and maths.

The federal government is calling on hopefuls to apply for the $24 million scholarship program, to help support the cost of university and vocational education and training.

Rejigged guidelines make it easier for drought-affected students to apply for the financial support, including families receiving the farm household allowance.

Vocational Education Minister Michaelia Cash says studies predict that three in every four Australian jobs of the future will require STEM skills.

"We know STEM skills will play a critical role in the future workforce," she said in a joint statement with Education Minister Dan Tehan on Monday.

"We want to make sure we are equipping the students today for the jobs of the future and, in particular, ensuring our regional economies are equipped to participate in future opportunities."

Applications close on February 1.
