Greater Western Sydney veteran Steve Johnson is set to return from injury for his side's big AFL derby on Saturday at the SCG.

The crafty forward has been troubled by knee issues for the past few weeks and didn't play last Saturday against Port Adelaide in Canberra.

However, the 33-year-old forward completed the Giants' Wednesday morning training session.

He looks set to be restored to the side for Saturday's clash with Sydney unless he pulls up badly on Thursday.

Midfielder Dylan Shaw (shoulder) and defender Heath Shaw (shin) also trained on Wednesday and looked set to line up against the Swans after collecting knocks last weekend.

Apart from former Swan Shane Mumford, Johnson is the only established member of the Giants likely to play on Saturday who has experienced an AFL victory on the SCG, where GWS have lost in all four appearances.

He won there with Geelong in 2011 and 2013, but lost on five other visits, including the epic 2005 semi-final.

It's not been an especially productive ground goals-wise for Stevie J, who has never kicked more than two there and has bagged just six majors across his seven SCG matches.

The 0-4 Swans haven't lost their first three SCG games of a season since 1993.

The last time they suffered three straight losses at their headquarters at any stage of a season was in 2009.

GWS, who have three straight since an opening-round away loss to Adelaide, will enter Saturday's game in the unfamiliar position of being favourite for a Sydney derby.

For the first time in 12 intra-city encounters, the Giants have opened as favourites.

Bookies haven't had Sydney as the outsider for a SCG match since round five in 2014, when they defeated Fremantle, and their price of $2.75 for a win this weekend is their longest at the ground since 2009.
