Steyn, Philander to miss Champions Trophy

Key South African bowlers Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander will miss the Champions Trophy cricket tournament.

Dale Steyn has been left out of South Africa's Champions Trophy squad as the bowler continues his recovery from a shoulder injury.

The Proteas paceman has been out since breaking a bone in his right shoulder in the first Test against Australia in November.

Despite missing out on the Champions Trophy squad, the 33-year-old has been included in the South Africa 'A' four-day squad for the upcoming tour of England.

South Africa face England in a three-game one-day international series before the Champions Trophy kicks off in June.

Should Steyn come through his return the bowler could be named in South Africa's Test squad which faces England in four matches from July.

CSA selection convener Linda Zondi said: "The four-day series will give us an opportunity to see how some of the players who are on the fringes of the Test squad perform in England ahead of the four-Test series.

"We still have time to finalise the Test team so that series can give us some pointers before we finalise the Test squad."

Vernon Philander has also been left out after the Sussex all-rounder picked up a groin injury in the County Championship Division Two clash against Kent over the weekend.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has earned his first ODI call-up while Morne Morkel makes a return to the limited-overs format after nearly 10 months.

AB de Villiers is fit to captain the side, despite injuries disrupting his participation at the Indian Premier League, and Zondi is confident of success.

"We have been working with this group of players for the last two seasons where our key emphasis has been consistency in selection," Zondi told www.cricket.co.za.

"That has shown in how this group has performed over the last while, which has resulted in winning three consecutive ODI series."

The squad will play three ODIs against England, starting with the first match at Headingley in Leeds on May 24, before their first group match of the Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka at the Oval on June 3.
