Sticky, stormy night ahead for Melbourne

There's been widespread flash flooding across Victoria as a series of rain bands continue to cross the state - and there's more to come.

Melburnians will have to endure a sticky, wet commute home with thunderstorms and high humidity likely to persist throughout the night.

The Bureau of Meteorology says more storms are heading for the city and are due to hit on Tuesday during the peak hour commute home.

"We've seen a pretty good downpour around the Melbourne area and this has led to quite a lot of reports of flash flooding," senior meteorologist Stephen King said on Tuesday afternoon.

Melbourne had about 8mm fall in 10 minutes, keeping the SES busy with 50 calls for help in an hour.

"Just some flash flooding around, particularly across Whitehorse and Malvern areas, so they got inundated about an hour ago with a very heavy shower," an SES spokesperson told AAP.

"Sydney road (in Brunswick) is flooded but I think that will dissipate fairly quickly."

Overnight Melbourne can expect a balmy top of 19C with high humidity that isn't expected to ease until Wednesday morning, the bureau said.

Elsewhere in Victoria there has been a massive deluge in the southwest and northeast of the state, which had picked up 40-50mm since 9am.

Shopfronts in Yea, 100km northeast of Melbourne, had water lapping at their doors on Monday evening after a heavy storm brought flash flooding.

The town received 45mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Tuesday while nearby Strath Creek copped 63mm.

The Yea hospital suffered minor damage to its roof when it was struck by lightning during the storm, the State Control Centre said.

SES responded to roughly 100 calls, mostly about Yea.

A low-pressure trough is moving eastwards across Victoria, likely bringing heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding.
