Australia's women's water polo team have claimed silver at the FINA World Cup, going down 10-6 to the USA in the final in Russia.

Rowie Webster, who scored 16 goals to help the Stingers' march to the final, was named player of the tournament after the final on Sunday.

The silver medal goes with gold at the World League Intercontinental Cup, where they beat the USA in the final in May, and bronze at the World League Super Final.

After opening the scoring through Bron Knox, Australia quickly conceded three times to trail at the first break 3-1, a trend which continued in the second quarter as the USA held a 7-3 halftime lead.

Australia trailed by five goals at the final change, and scored the only goal of the fourth quarter as they chased gold - but just couldn't break the USA's stellar defence.

"It was a fantastic effort by the girls. They gave 100 per cent and did not stop attacking right to the end of the game," coach Greg McFadden said.

"The improvement during the course of this tour has been excellent.

"We lost our exhibition game to Hungary prior to the tournament and now we have finished as silver medallists at World Cup."
