The Australian women's water polo team has lost their quarter-final match to the United States at the world championships in Hungary.
Stingers veteran Keesja Gofers' four goals weren't enough to avoid the 7-5 loss to the reigning world and Olympic champions in Budapest on Monday.
The game remained goalless until four-and-a-half minutes in the second quarter before world No.1 USA took control, taking a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Gofers scored a third-quarter double but Australia could not shrink the three-goal advantage at the final break before the Americans held on to set up a semi-final clash with Russia.
The world No.4 Stingers will meet Italy in a fifth-place playoff semi-final on Wednesday.
