Stoinis to embrace the pressure in India

Marcus Stoinis made a name for himself at Eden Park, renowned for boasting some of international cricket's most vocal fans, so a rambunctious crowd in Ranchi and chirpy captain Virat Kohli hold no fear for the 27-year-old who could make his Test debut against India on Thursday.

Glenn Maxwell remains the frontrunner to replace Mitch Marsh in Australia's side that lost by 75 runs in Bangalore, with runs expected to be at a premium in the the third Test, but the visitors could yet opt to blood Stoinis as they seek to secure the Border-Gavaskar trophy by taking a 2-1 lead in the four-Test series.

Stoinis only has two training sessions in Ranchi to convince on-duty selector Mark Waugh and coach Darren Lehmann he is mentally and physically right to go.

He has proved he thrives on pressure and won't be intimidated by anything earlier this year in Auckland, where he hammered New Zealand's attack in a memorable one-day knock of 146 not out.

"That was pretty hostile and the the crowd was into me early, but they came around," Stoinis said.

"I've heard the Test matches here have been amazing, and the boys said the energy here has been unbelievable.

"So if nothing else you can draw on the energy, and that can revitalise you a bit."

Stoinis, who didn't roll his arm over on Tuesday, added the slow-and-low pitch would suit his style of bowling.

The allrounder has form in India, having dismissed Test batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Karun Nair in Chennai while playing for Australia A in 2015.

"Coming here for the Aussie A tour, it actually did suit my bowling. A couple staying low, a couple grabbing off the wicket, off cutters," Stoinis said.

"You've just got to hit the wicket hard here and see if anything happens."

Stoinis has only scored 197 runs at 17.9 in the current Sheffield Shield season for Victoria. He suggested first-class form in recent years plus the maiden ODI ton in Auckland were both better indicators of what he is capable of.

"New Zealand was a breakout for me," he said. "(There has been) a good three or four years of Shield cricket where I've been in the top four or five run-scorers. So the confidence is there."
