Cameron Smith has been cleared of a serious foot injury after the Melbourne captain pulled up well on Saturday morning.

Smith limped from the field in the 73rd minute of his side's 30-20 loss to South Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Friday and was immediately treated on the sideline.

Initial fears were that he had suffered an Achilles injury, however that has now been downgraded to a tendon problem in his foot.

He will be monitored during the week, however medical staff are confident the injury is not a serious one and at this stage he won't require scans.

Smith's great record with injuries is well known, missing just 11 games to injury in his record-breaking 376-game career.

His presence would be vital next Sunday against Cronulla, after Melbourne slipped to their first lost in nine games against the Rabbitohs when they gave up a 10-point lead.

Coach Craig Bellamy was pleased with their start but suggested his team may have been gotten swept away by a stretch of strong form that swept them to the top of the table.

They are now second after being leapfrogged by the Rabbitohs.

"Perhaps during the week some of our guys might've been reading too much or hearing a little bit too much after the last couple of weeks," Bellamy said.

"But certainly we're back to reality this week. We'll review it, have a look at what we need to do and what we didn't do so well and move onto next week."
