Storm Desmond brought extreme weather to many other areas of northern England and Scotland as the government issued severe flood warnings for 31 areas of England and Wales, with many of the warnings along swollen rivers.
Emergency services in county Cumbria rescued several people on Saturday from "vehicles stuck in flood water", assistant Chief Constable Andy Towler said.
"Apart from the obvious risk to members of the public, the abandoned vehicles are then causing considerable problems for emergency services when travelling around the county," Towler said.

Residents in parts of Cumbria's Appleby, Windermere, Kendal and Keswick towns were evacuated as authorities opened emergency shelters.
In London, police said a 90-year-old man died after he was apparently "caught by a gust of wind and blown off the pavement against the side of a moving bus".
Many rail services were suspended in Scotland and northwest England, while several stretches of rivers in northeast England and the Midlands were at risk of flooding, the Environment Agency warned.
