An ancient Sierra Redwood, believed to be around 1,000 years old and known for the tunnel carved through its trunk to once allow vehicles to pass, has fallen to the ground at Calaveras Big Trees State Park following a storm.
On Calaveras Big Trees Association’s Facebook page, a post reads: "The Pioneer Cabin tree has fallen!
"This iconic and still living tree - the tunnel tree - enchanted many visitors. The storm was just too much for it."
Visitors have been posting pictures of themselves by the tree to the Facebook page in tribute.
Sierra redwoods are also known as Giant sequoias and are known for their resilience.
"A tree that lives for 2,000 years may live through 100 fires," explains the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
It was one of the largest in the state park, standing 45 metres tall and with a diametre of more than 5.2 metres, according to National Geographic.
