Storm NRL players put on notice to lift

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy has put his players on notice, saying more may be sent to the NRL club's feeder side if their attitude doesn't improve.

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy insists other Storm players may follow Brodie Croft back to the NRL club's feeder side if their attitude doesn't improve against Newcastle on Friday night.

Following the demotion of the young halfback to the Queensland Cup and the Storm's three losses from five games, Bellamy says some players have been warned.

"There's been a couple of guys put on notice," Bellamy said on Thursday.

"There's a couple who need to do their job a bit better than they're doing at the moment.

"We've obviously lost three games but our defence has been doing a good job so we just need a couple of adjustments in attack and with attitude and hopefully we get back on track again."

Bellamy said that 20-year-old Croft had been given specific instructions about what he needed to work on at Easts in Brisbane.

"It's not something that we wanted to happen," Bellamy said.

"He's a confident kid but he knows there's things he has to work on, that I don't want to go public with."

Ryley Jacks, who played 13 games for last season as an injury and Origin replacement, gets his chance at halfback as the NRL champions look for more composure and direction in their stuttering attack.

"Last year he did a blue collar job for us and from those games we won 11 or so, so he obviously played his part," Bellamy said.

"This is a good chance for him to grab something a bit more permanent."

The much-improved Knights trumped Brisbane last round and sit seventh on the NRL ladder - two places above Melbourne.

Led by star recruit Mitchell Pearce, Bellamy said they had plenty of threats with fullback Kalyn Ponga also catching his eye.

"They obviously recruited well in the off-season," Bellamy said.

"They have some real experience there and some real class as well.

"That young fullback (Kalyn Ponga), I hadn't seen him play a whole heap but he is an outstanding player."

"They have some guys who have played some big time footy - Pearce has played a whole heap for NSW, Aidan Guerra, Jacob Lillyman have played a heap for Queensland so they have that real experience there now, big time, big games that they didn't have the last few years and it has made a real difference to them."
