Storms cause power outages across SA

Thousands of properties across South Australia are without power after a night of thunderstorms across the state.

About 150,000 lightning strikes pounded South Australia blacking out about 18,000 properties as thunderstorms swept across the state.

The storms struck early on Friday morning causing about 90 power outages as vital electricity infrastructure was damaged.

SA Power Networks said areas impacted were spread across the Yorke and Eyre peninsulas as well as the Adelaide Hills and the Adelaide metropolitan area.

Extra crews were brought on to restore services as quickly as possible, with the number of customers still without electricity cut to less than 2500 by late afternoon.

At the height of the storms, the Country Fire Service was called to a house fire at Mclaren Vale, south of Adelaide, which destroyed the property along with two cars.

Damage has been put at up to $300,000 and while the cause is still to be determined, authorities haven't ruled out a lightning strike on one of the cars.

The storms came after a day of surging temperatures on Thursday as the CFS also moved to bring forward the bushfire danger period by two weeks for the Mt Lofty Ranges and the Adelaide area.

Acting chief officer Andrew Stark said the season would start on November 17 because of a drier-than-average winter across the area and increased temperatures through spring.

Adelaide had a top temp of 33.6C on Thursday while temperatures surged to 40C in some country centres.

The Bureau of Meteorology said conditions would be milder next week, with up to 10 mm of rain forecast for Adelaide on Monday.
