Storms, hail hit parts of southeast Qld

Several severe storms bringing heavy rain, hail and strong winds have been detected in parts of southeast Queensland where warnings are in place.

Dangerous thunderstorms are battering parts of southeast Queensland with warnings in place for large parts of the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology said "very dangerous" storms which could bring large hail, heavy rain and damaging winds were detected near Yarraman and Nanango, northwest of Brisbane, on Friday afternoon.

Other severe storms were also showing on the radar near Kingaroy and Maryvale.

"Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely," a statement from the weather bureau said.

Warnings are in place in the districts of Gympie, Somerset, Scenic Rim, Southern Downs, South Burnett, Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley.

Hail has fallen between Nanango and Kingaroy on Friday afternoon.

A more general severe storm warning is also in place for the Central Highlands, Coalfields, Wide Bay-Burnett, Darling Downs, Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts.
