Storm's Kaufusi feeling heat from rivals

Melbourne second-rower Felise Kaufusi says he's feeling the heat from young NRL rivals such as Tino Fa'Asuamaleaui for a starting role in the Storm.

They may not be able to pronounce his name but Melbourne's current crop of NRL second-rowers are well aware of who Tino Fa'Asuamaleaui is.

Ahead of the Storm's final trial, against North Queensland in Mackay on Saturday, Felise Kaufusi and Joe Stimson say there's plenty of talent eager for a crack at their jerseys.

Fa'Asuamaleaui, who turned 19 earlier this month, stands above many - figuratively and literally - at 198cm and 107kg.

He has played Queensland under-18s and Junior Kangaroos and was on track for a possible NRL debut late last season before just falling short.

Kaufusi said Fa'Asuamaleaui had a similar presence to Melbourne's giant rampaging prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona.

Despite playing for Queensland and Australia last year, Kaufusi felt the pressure was on.

"Big Nelson was huge but Tino isn't far off and he's one of the guys I will look out for coming for my spot," Kaufusi said on Tuesday.

"He's got everything - he's fast, powerful and strong in the gym so he's keeping me on my toes."

Veteran contender Kenny Bromwich is also in the mix as well as former Australian schoolboy, 25-year-old utility forward Tom Eisenhuth, who only managed on NRL game for Penrith back in 2012.

"It's pretty healthy to have that - you can't fall back and feel complacent that you're in the top squad," 26-year-old Kaufusi said.

"These young guys coming through are stronger, more powerful, faster so it's up to me to try and keep my game at that level.

"Unless you're (skipper) Cameron Smith, no-one's spot is safe if you're not working hard enough."

The Storm intend to play their full-strength squad against the Cowboys, including Smith, although representative centre Will Chambers looks unlikely after sitting out training.

Scott Drinkwater is again set to don the fullback jersey left vacant at Billy Slater's retirement and can cement it for round one with another strong showing.

Fielding a rookie squad, Melbourne fell short to the Warriors in their opening trial last Friday night and have targeted their ball control as an area for improvement in Mackay after only completing at 50 per cent.
