Powerful storms tearing through the central and southern United States have killed at least 25 people over the past 24 hours in the US state of Alabama, emergency officials told AFP.

The 0030 GMT Thursday toll was up from six killed that state officials reported earlier, and brings the storm total to at least 44 dead across the United States.

A massive spring storm has swamped the central United States with days of heavy rain and deadly twisters, washing out roads, knocking down power lines and flattening buildings.
