Storms lash Qld again, more power outages

Wild weather has struck southeast Queensland again, a day after thousands were left without power by severe thunderstorms.

Severe thunderstorms have lashed southeast Queensland for a second day, leaving thousands in the dark.

More than 14,000 homes remained without power on Saturday night after the wild weather rolled over the state's southeast, striking the Gold Coast in the afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology received reports of 4cm hailstones over Nerang, in the region's northwest, while 94km/h wind gusts swept through around 5pm.

On Friday, trees and power lines were pulled down in the Scenic Rim, Darling Downs, Logan and Gold Coast areas, while the north and southwest of Brisbane copped the brunt of the storm.

Power provider Energex said there were more than 160,000 lightning strikes on Friday.

The silver lining to the cloudy weather is an overall cooling of temperatures forecast for coming days, with storm cells clearing on Saturday night thanks to a southerly change.

"That should be the last of the storms ahead of the holidays," BOM senior forecaster Gabriel Branescu said.

"There's a slight chance of shower on Monday but then it should be clear and sunny for Christmas."
